WTLS offers free legal help with civil legal issues. Our funding is limited, and unfortunately, we cannot help everyone who needs it. We set our case priorities every year based on input from members of our community. If you want to tell us the kinds of cases you think are most important, please fill out our priorities survey.
Currently, WTLS’ priorities include the following issues:
Consumer
Advice and representation with debt collection lawsuits, repossession, debt collection harassment, credit counseling, garnishment, student loan collection, unfair sales practices, and contract and warranty issues.
Benefits
Advice and representation with getting or keeping AFDC/Families First, SNAP, SSI, Social Security Disability, unemployment, TennCare, Medicare, and access to special education services.
Housing
WTLS is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, a Fair Housing Initiatives Program, and provides education and representation with wrongful evictions and other landlord-tenant problems. WTLS educates and helps renters and homeowners experiencing discrimination in housing leasing, lending, and insuring and helps homeowners at risk of or facing foreclosure by getting loan modifications.
Elder Law
Advice and representation to seniors age 60 and older with a focus on public benefits, healthcare, housing, consumer, and simple wills, powers of attorney, and advance directives.
Victim Rights
Advice and representation to victims of domestic violence, stalking, harassment, sexual assault, elder abuse, financial exploitation, and other violent crimes. Legal services include order of protection, divorce, custody modification, contempt, and victim advocacy in criminal court.
Family
Advice and representation in a variety of family law matters including divorce, custody, and child support. Services are very limited due to the volume of requests received.
