CURRENT ATTORNEY OPENINGS

WTLS provides free civil legal help to low-income West Tennesseans seeking access to basic rights of shelter, financial security, and freedom from abuse. WTLS works with community organizations and client groups to educate communities about civil legal issues and access to justice. Candidates should have a strong commitment to access to equal justice for West Tennesseans who cannot afford to hire an attorney. 

 

This position is funded 75% under the Legal Services for Veterans (LSV) grant with the Veterans Administration. The position’s remaining 25% is funded to provide civil legal assistance to Veterans and Veteran families who qualify for civil legal assistance under the Supportive Services for Veterans Families grant and to individuals facing housing instability. 

 

The Veterans Staff Attorney is responsible for providing legal services to eligible Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.   The goal is to assist homeless and at-risk Veterans who have unaddressed legal needs that create barriers to housing stability. Grant positions are funded through the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal could result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.   This position reports to the Director of Special Projects and works closely with the housing, consumer, benefits, and family law teams. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following tasks: 

 

Attorney Duties: 

 

  • Provide legal advice and representation in civil legal matters affecting housing stability to homeless and at-risk Veterans and Veteran families 
  • Provide civil legal advice and representation to individuals and families facing housing instability  
  • Provide outreach and education activities for Veteran population 
  • Build referral partnerships with community and government agencies serving homeless or at-risk Veterans  
  • Meet the requirements of the LSV and SSVF projects  
  • Attend training relevant to housing instability or Veteran services affecting WTLS’ client population as directed by the Director of Special Projects  

  

General WTLS Duties: 

  • Accurately record and update timekeeping entries in real-time, ensuring detailed and precise documentation of work hours, project time allocation, and task completion for reporting and payroll purposes 
  • Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with staff by facilitating effective communication, promoting teamwork, and providing support to ensure a collaborative and productive work environment 
  • Participate in staff meetings, board meetings, and other meetings, as requested 
  • Serve on internal committees, work groups, and other groups to promote and improve organizational operations

Compensation & Benefits: 

  • Compensation: $58,200-100,000 DOE. This position is a full-time position, and compensation is made according to the WTLS Salary Scale that became effective on April 28, 2025.

Job Summary: The Development Manager is responsible for resource development activities, serves as the primary grant writer, and leads WTLS fundraising efforts. They provide strategic direction to WTLS’ fundraising and communications efforts to generate sustainable revenue that allows WTLS to pursue its mission, programs, and strategic plan. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Executive Leadership Team, Grants Manager, and Communications Team.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Development Duties:

  • Develop, direct, coordinate, and manage WTLS development and fundraising activities
  • Develop a long-term development plan, including goals, strategies, and tactics consistent with WTLS’ mission, vision, and values
  • Develop, promote, and implement an annual fundraising campaign, including timeline and execution, production of campaign materials, supervision of volunteers, publicity, and reporting from private, local, state, and federal funding sources
  • Review present funding sources to ensure sustainability and mission-focused
  • Manage all aspects of WTLS fundraising campaigns, including endowments, capital and/or planned giving
  • Build and manage a pipeline of donors and prospects, including individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Coordinate donor and stakeholder events
  • Research, formulate, and implement strategies to encourage consistent growth in new and existing fundraising and development initiatives
  • Develop and/or coordinate production of written materials highlighting our work, such as annual reports, brochures, e-newsletters, and solicitation letters
  • Work with communications team on WTLS website and social media content, including keeping baseline content up-to-date and publishing dynamic content to advance development efforts

Under the supervision of the Intake Unit Lead, the Intake Department is the first point of contact for individuals seeking legal services from WTLS. Intake Paralegals play a vital role by interviewing applicants to determine eligibility, gathering case information, identifying legal issues, and screening for public benefit eligibility. Because we receive a high volume of calls, this position requires a motivated individual who enjoys communicating with and helping people.

The Human Resource Manager oversees all aspects of human resources practices and processes. This position is integral to fostering a supportive workplace and ensuring our team has the resources and environment they need to provide exceptional legal services. The Human Resource Manager handles recruitment, performance management, training and development, benefits administration, compliance with labor laws and regulations, and assistance in developing and updating policies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Implements and oversees WTLS human resources, including compensation, benefits, leave, disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations, performance and talent management, productivity, recognition, morale, and training and professional .

West Tennessee Legal Services offers a reduced fee program for private attorneys benefiting low-income residents in West Tennessee. WTLS is able to pay private attorneys up to $125 an hour for cases.
