SNAP Information

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, is a federal program that supplements families’ food budgets and allows those who qualify to buy food using a Benefit Security Card. The program provides nutrition for those who have a need.

How to know if you qualify for SNAP

How to apply

You can apply for SNAP benefits online here, or you can visit your local Department of Human Services (DHS) office. Once DHS receives your application, they will contact you with an appointment time. You must attend this appointment and bring all requested documentation to the appointment.

What to bring with you to the interview

There are items that you will need to gather to prepare for your interview with your SNAP Eligibility Worker. The items that will be needed include:

  • information to prove your identity (birth certificate, driver’s licenses, work/school identification card, or voter registration card),
  • proof of where you live (utility bill, rental agreement, or mortgage statement with your address on it),
  • proof of citizenship or immigration/naturalization papers if you were born outside of United States,
  • medical expense deductions (billing statements, itemized medical receipts like prescription drugs, Medicare card indicating Part “B” coverage, or a repayment agreement with your physician),
  • proof of earned income (pay stubs, statement from employer as to gross wages, income tax forms, or self-employment bookkeeping records),
  • and proof of unearned income (bank statements showing direct deposit or an agency letter showing money received, like Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Veterans Affairs benefits, child support, alimony, unemployment, and retirement).

To file a program discrimination complaint, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, AD-3027, found online at How to File a Program Discrimination Complaint and at any USDA office or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
